Dementia Respite Support Program

JFCS_2063

Baker Senior Center Naples offers several weekly support groups for individuals with early to mid-stage dementia in Naples and Marco Island. Each group meets weekly for four hours.

The program is affiliated with the Brookdale Foundation’s National Group Respite Program and provides socialization and wellness with a holistic approach to everyday challenges and living. The focus of the groups is on language skills, memory techniques, relaxation techniques, socialization and self-esteem. The program includes Dakim Brain Fitness, which is designed to help users strengthen attention, focus and concentration. Groups perform activities that enhance social skills and assist in recall and language skills.

Participants work with a board-certified music therapist, thanks to a partnership with the Department of Music Therapy at the Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music. A licensed art therapist engages participants on creative ways to overcome cognitive challenges.

Among services offered are a Weekly Caregiver Support Group and Quarterly Intensive Caregiver Training (Bootcamp)

Early Memory Loss Group

Brain Joggers offers an opportunity for individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or similar circumstances the chance to share practical advice and coping skills, as well as to discuss feelings, concerns and frustrations.  The objective of the program is to stimulate thinking and memory, and to help maintain the physical functioning of the participants.  The program includes discussions that focus on topics such as “right brain vs. left brain”, stress management and real-life concerns that participants are facing.  All activities are designed to provide cognitive challenges at the appropriate levels for the different participants.  Language skills, memory techniques, relaxation techniques, socialization and building self-esteem are areas of concentration.

The group meets every Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., including lunch.  The cost is $35 per session, and scholarships are provided for those who are unable to afford the fee.  As with all NCS programs, no one is ever turned away because of inability to pay.
